Education and Research |
Role(s) | Located at Purdue University, the Institute for Drug Discovery provides a collaborative platform that brings together biologists, chemists, pharmaceutical scientists, veterinary clinicians, and engineers in order to translate basic discoveries into new diagnostics and therapeutics that will directly impact patient care. |
Mission | At the Purdue Institute for Drug Discovery, we focus on improving the quality of life for people around the world. As one of the preeminent drug discovery centers in the United States, we engage in drug discovery across disciplines and institutions, translate basic research into clinical applications, educate the next generation of researchers in drug discovery and commercialize innovations for the marketplace – all with the goal of developing new diagnostic tools and treatments for people in need. |
History | 2013 – PIDD was founded as one of two Purdue's Big Moves 2018 – PIDD and the Indiana University School of Medicine were awarded a grant by the NIH to form the TREAT-AD Center, which is dedicated to discovering new therapeutics to treat Alzheimer's disease |
Org | • Staff of research scientists, drug discovery experts, and management • Group of >125 affiliated faculty (across all colleges at Purdue) Leadership: • Zhong-Yin Zhang, Director (zhang-zy@purdue.edu) • Karson Putt, Managing Director (puttk@purdue.edu) |
Board | PIDD sustains internal and external advisory boards which can be found here: https://www.purdue.edu/discoverypark/drug-discovery/about-us/Leadership%20Team%20.php and https://www.purdue.edu/discoverypark/drug-discovery/about-us/External%20Advisory%20Board.php |
Finance | • Annual support from Purdue University • Center funding from the NIH |
Data Source | Purdue’s faculty |
Data Access | PIDD maintains the Purdue drug pipeline (https://www.purdue.edu/discoverypark/drug-discovery/clinical-translation/pipeline.php) and makes information available on the current status of drug discovery/development projects, and Purdue-discovered drugs in clinical trials |
Tech Capabilities | The Drug Discovery building provides facilities for organic synthesis, cell culture, analytical chemistry, molecule purification, biochemistry, molecular biology and fluorescent imaging. Core facilities located within the building include: • High-throughput/high-content chemical genomics screening facility – PIDD houses a state-of-the-art HTS facility with capabilities to screen biochemical and cell -based system with colorimetric, fluorimetric, lumimetric, and high-content read-outs. The facility also contains equipment for continuous live-cell imaging and hit confirmation. • Purdue compound repository – with >500,000 compounds formatted for HTS, Purdue has one of the largest academic screening libraries in the country • NMR satellite facility – part of the interdepartmental NMR facility, the PIDD NMR facility contains a 500 MHz Bruker NMR with cryo-probe and autosampler • Mass spectrometry satellite facility – part of the campus-wide mass spectrometry facility, the PIDD MS facility contains GC-MS, MALDI, and high-resolution LC-MS QTOF instruments • Radioactive "Hot" Lab – facilities to safely handle, synthesize, and radioactive compounds and imaging agents. In conjunction with the imaging facility, PIDD also has the capability to perform high-resolution CT, SPECT, and PET imaging in rodents. |
Projects | • Hundreds of active drug discovery/development projects in oncology, CNS/neuro, immunology, and anti-microbials including: >75 actively tracked drugs in the pipeline >25 drugs advanced into human clinical trials • TREAT-AD Center, a $36 million NIH-funded center for the discovery of new therapeutics for Alzheimer's disease |
Future Focus | The continued translation of academic discovered drugs into the clinic |
Talent Development | • Graduate student training in a NIH-funded T32 training program • Workshops, seminars, retreats, and an annual symposium |
